Speed limit of 40km/h and other regulations awaits South African motorists
rekord.co.za - Motorists will have to adapt to new road regulations from the end of this year. The Departartment of Transport in South Africa are about to have a few angry drivers on their hands with new regulations put in place to reduce road accidents and deaths across the country.
These new regulations include slower speed limits, the banning of carrying children in the back of a bakkie, restricting the use of heavy vehicles on public roads and probably the most contentious one, having to take a practical test when renewing one’s driver’s license.
Last month, Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters announced the following restrictions:
-Drivers to be re-evaluated when renewing a licence.
-No more than five people to be carried in a bakkie load bed.
-Children not to be transported in a bakkie load bed.
-Speed limits to be reduced from 60 to 40km/h in urban areas, from 100 to 80km/h in rural areas and from 120 to 100km/h on freeways running through a residential area.
-Goods vehicles above 9000kg GVM to be banned from public roads during peak travelling times (06:00 to 09:00 and 17:00 to 20:00).
Most road accidents reported on South African roads are due to incompetent drivers and unsafe vehicles.
Numerous reports have indicated that these new regulations will come into effect at the end of 2015.
